Spin, sweat and success @ the Jayco Herald Sun Tour: Under the helmet
The Arthurs Seat stage is the flagship stage of the Tour and hosted the flagship event of Spin, sweat and success — a fascinating discussion about just what goes through a rider’s mind as they’re halfway up a mountain. How do elite cyclists mentally prepare for a stage race, and how does their mental preparation affect their physical performance and injury risk? Sports psychologist David Williams, physiotherapist Gary Cairnduff and legend of Australian cycling Phil Anderson joined our host, journalist and avid cyclist Matt de Neef, and other special guests in the periods between passes by the peloton.
Free Range Science brought the science of cycling to the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. Following the Tour around Victoria, Spin, sweat and success was a program of free science events which went inside the sport we love to examine some of the science which helps the athletes perform at their best. With events in the major regional stops of the tour, Ballarat and the Bellarine Peninsula experienced topics such as advanced equipment design, the physical requirements of sport, and injury prevention. Arthur’s Seat hosted our flagship event, a fascinating insight into the psychological side of competition when we were joined by a sports psychologist, a physiotherapist, and Australian cycling legend Phil Anderson.
This was the first time anywhere in the world that an elite stage race was joined by a travelling science program, making 2011′s Jayco Herald Sun Tour a truly unique experience.
